Report on Events organized by Department of Commerce, Shivaji College

1. Annual Acadeic Festival: OPTIMUM 2021

Kaizen, the Commerce Society of Shivaji College organised its annual academic festival 'Optimum' on 6th April, 2021 on online mode. Professor Vijay Kumar Shrotryia, department of Commerce, Delhi School of Economics, graced the occasion as Chief Guest.

The event began by invoking God's blessings with a ceremony of lighting the lamp. Dr. Rajinder Singh, Teacher-in-Charge, Department of Commerce, delivered the welcome note for the event, which was followed by the address of Dr. Shiv Kumar Sahdev, Principal, Shivaji College.

The event was attended by more than 200 participants. The dignitaries unveiled the fifth edition of 'OPTIMUM', the annual departmental magazine.

The speaker for the day, Professor Vijay Kumar Shrotryia, addressed the audience on the theme – ‘Purpose, Passion and Happiness.’ He quoted very simple yet motivating examples to encourage the audience to follow their aim with passion. He enlightened the audience with his knowledge about business world. The session was followed by a question - answer session with the speaker. The event was concluded with a vote of thanks presented by Jasmine Goel, the president of Kaizen, the Commerce society of Shivaji College.

The inaugural session was followed by various students’ competitions where participants from different colleges participate. All the events were organized online.

2. FDP on Hypothesis Testing and Techniques for Data Analysis

The Department of Commerce, Shivaji College, University of Delhi and Knowledge partner Department of Commerce, University of Delhi under the aegis of Department-College Interface in collaboration with Mahatma Hansraj Faculty Development Centre organized a one-week Interdisciplinary Online Faculty Development Program on the topic, “Hypothesis Testing and Techniques for Data Analysis from March 5 to 11, 2021.The inaugural event of the FDP was graced by Prof. R.K. Singh, Head and Dean, Department of Commerce, Delhi School of Economics, as Chief Guest virtually. The guest was extended with a warm welcome by the Dr. Rajinder Singh, FDP Convenor, Department of Commerce, Shivaji College. Dr. Shiv Kumar Sahdev, Principal, Shivaji College, also addressed the audience. Mr. Ashutosh, Deputy Coordinator of Mahatma Hansraj Faculty Development Centre, Hansraj College, University of Delhi and Dr Amit Kumar Singh, Coordinator of Department-College Interface, Department of Commerce, University of Delhi, also addressed the audience.

3. Webinar on Investor Awareness and the Role of Regulations

Kaizen the Commerce Society of Shivaji College organised a webinar on "Investment Awareness and the Role of Regulators" dated 5th February 2021. We invited Ms. Veena Kumari (Manager, SBI), Mr. Harbinder Sokhi (BSE, IPF), and Mr. Amit Kumar Jain (Manager, CDSL) for the session.

They shared their knowledge on various topics with the students like the importance of investment planning, things to be taken into account while taking investment decisions, various regulators in the market, various venues for fruitful investments and sorting of complaints.It was a really fruitful session for both the fresher’s and the final year students.

4. Webinar on Strategies for India’s Economic Growth in VUCA World

A webinar on “Strategies for India’s Economic Growth in VUCA world” was organized by the Department of Commerce (Under the aegis of IQAC), Shivaji College, University of Delhi on 29th September, 2020.The event started at 11:00 a.m. Via Cisco WebEx and it was witnessed by over 300 participants from pan India.

Prof. Alok Pandey began the session by explaining the meaning of VUCA i.e, Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. He stated that there could be a time where our earnings may dip, the economy may dip, inter linkages in an economy may not be tapped properly and uncertainty may increase. He explained that the world is in the VUCA world because of rapid technology growth, rising aspirations of humans etc.

5. Nine Day Certificate Course on GST from 17 August, 2020 - 28 August, 2020

Shivaji College in collaboration with Voice of CA conducted a 9 Day Certificate Course on GST from 17 August, 2020 - 28 August, 2020. The course was conducted for the faculty, professionals and students. The webinars were conducted on CISCO WEBEX and on VOCA YouTube channel. Various Chartered Accountants like CA AANCHAL KAPOOR, CA ASHOK BATRA, CA AARCHANA JAIN, CA SONIA CHABRA, CA NAVYA MALHOTRA, CA RAHUL, CA PIYUSH BANSAL and CA GAURAV GUPTA headed the webinars on essential aspects of goods and services tax. The topics covered were Levy & Collection of GST, Input tax credit, Time and Place of Supply, Reverse charge mechanism, Valuation of Supply, E Way Bill, Maintaining Accounts, Returns & Records, Assessment of Returns, Appellate Procedures, TDS/TCS/Refunds, Composition Scheme & Penalties under GST. Every concept was taught theoretically as well as practically. After the end of every webinar questions were taken from the participants. Every query was solved by the speakers. Every concept was told with utmost focus and conceptualization.

6. Webinar on Building Self Reliant India in Post Covid -19 Regime

Department of Commerce, Shivaji College under the aegis of IQAC, organised a webinar on the 'Building Self-Reliant India in Post COVID-19 Regime' on 19th May, 2020, to address the challenges and opportunities ahead of the country in the unprecedented scenario. The webinar was graced by Professor Tejinder Sharma, Department of Commerce, Kurukshetra University as the resource person.

7. Webinar on Changing Paradigm of Research in Covid Era

Department of Commerce, Shivaji College under the aegis of IQAC, organised a webinar on the 'Changing Paradigm of Research in COVID era', on 12th May, 2020, to address the challenges faced by the field of research in the unprecedented scenario. The webinar was graced by seasoned academia Dr. Hamendra Kumar Dangi, Associate Professor, Department of Commerce, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, as the resource person. The session invited participation from students, faculty members and research scholars across universities.
