B.Sc. (Hons.) Biochemistry is one of the premium undergraduate courses offered by the University of Delhi. Biochemistry is a branch of biological science which focuses on the chemistry of living organisms and their biological processes. During the three-year course, the students not only gain sound theoretical knowledge from highly qualified faculty members, but also hands-on-training through extensive practical work in well-equipped laboratories. The students are also given exposure to the research work going on in the frontiers of science by organizing educational tours, talks by eminent scientists, seminars and conferences.
The department receives funding from the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, under the prestigious Star College Scheme, the academic experience of the students of our department is further enhanced in the form of additional practical to help better understanding of concepts, minor projects and summer training programs to gain insight into research work by and inspire them to take up future careers in the biological sciences. A joint enterprise of students and teachers, “The Biochemical Society” of the department, has the objective of keeping the students abreast of the latest findings, developments and avenues in the field of biological sciences. In addition, the department releases an annual edition of “Biokemi”, a scientific magazine in which students publish their articles and acquire the skills of scientific writing, bibliography and checking for plagiarism. The department has also constituted a Journal Club, to enable the students to read, present and discuss exciting research work published in journals of repute.
Graduates from our department are regularly selected for M.Sc. and integrated PhD programmes in prestigious institutes in India. Our alumni pursue careers in research, scientific writing, teaching as well as the industry, in both India and abroad.
